Desert Ecology

John Sowell

I found this book to be fascinating and one that I truly recommend to anybody exploring the desert southwest. In some ways, it is similar to book The Secret Knowledge of Water. The author did not delve as deeply into the philosophical issues and wanderings as was done in The Secret Knowledge of Water, but it treats the deserts of the southwest as entire ecosystems in comparing them to other deserts in the world through knowledge of temperature and water. When I say water, I mean water. Not just springs and streams but also moisture in the ground, plants and animals. It is truly the work of a scientific mind whose aim is to share this knowledge with someone who walks the desert southwest and wishes to benefit from his findings for their own personal enjoyment and to enrich their personal experience.
